A variety of fresh herbs growing on a sunny windowsill

For many urban dwellers, a sunny windowsill is the only available gardening space. Fortunately, that’s all you need to cultivate a thriving indoor herb garden. Having fresh basil, mint, and thyme within arm's reach while cooking is a simple luxury that elevates any meal.

Choosing the Right Herbs

Not all herbs perform well indoors. Woodier herbs like rosemary and oregano require intense, direct sunlight, which can be hard to provide behind modern UV-blocking window glass. We recommend starting with more forgiving varieties:

Lighting and Watering

Herbs generally need 6 to 8 hours of bright, direct sunlight. If your windows face north or are shaded by neighboring buildings, consider a small, efficient LED grow light. When watering, wait until the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Indoor plants are highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered.
